Classic Audio Designs is a Melbourne-based company established by Frank Hinton in response to the expressed needs of the professional audio production industry as a vehicle to research, develop and manufacture high performance audio products in Australia.
The first of these products is the Grover Notting cross reference monitor. Around 2002 (no one is quite sure of the time frame) Frank received a call from an old customer/friend, Gerry Duffy - founder and CEO of the well respected post production company Labsonics.
Gerry had a pressing need for a quantity of properly designed, application-specific cross reference audio monitors to deploy throughout his organization. Gerry was then using speakers deemed no longer appropriate and he was unable to find anything suitable on the market to replace them. Whilst he was happy with his primary monitoring, the critical cross reference was missing. We weren't able to assist at the time as we too discovered there was no relevant product available, nor was any manufacturer interested in looking at this vital area of monitoring.
In the ensuing years we heard variations on the same theme time and time again. We heard of post-production houses acquiring tiny (honky/beamy) PA speakers and even old TVs to do the job. We heard of mastering suites referencing to computer speakers that became obsolete every three or so months; mix engineers running back and forward to their car CD player to make assessments; producers using their laptops and many engineers working without cross reference or second opinion at all because of the lack of consistency within the industry.

In July 2007 we again proposed this type of product to the manufacturing sector - to no avail. So in December of the same year, we decided to develop our own product. With Frank's experience stemming back to the mid to late 60's with the legendary Strauss Sound Systems and that of his colleagues at ATT Audio Controls, Trav Falkiner and Des Amos, collectively the team has upwards of 95 years’ experience in the professional audio production area. We began the development ourselves and satisfied with the results, production commenced a year later in conjunction with our greatly valued production partners, Nadrasca Industry who manufacture our cabinets for us. Nadrasca is an organization that has been established to provide people with a mild disability a means of employment and self-fulfilment and we are proud of our association with them.
